One important parameter in the study of dynamic systems is material damping. It is defined as the ability of a material to absorb vibration by internal friction and convert the mechanical energy into heat. In spite of its importance in the study of rotating machinery, it has not been studied deeply because of the difficulty analyzing and testing its different types and mechanisms. This master thesis presents a new method to measure damping in mechanical systems. The mechanical system analyzed in this essay is a rotating shaft.
