The majority of wind energy conversion systems (WECS) currently in operation in the world uses asynchronous generators for the transformation of the energy contained in the wind into electric energy. In Brazil, although small the amount of wind power stations, the existing units are mainly based on synchronous generation principles. This is in accordance with the technology named as German concept. Using this technology, the turbine operates with variable speed since the synchronization of the generation with the main grid is made through static frequency converters.
