A Proposal for dynamic compensation of unbalanced loads

Ideally, three-phase electrical systems must have voltages and currents with the same magnitude and with an angular phase-shift of 120 °. However, the situations found in the field, as a rule, show dissimilarities between these electric quantities, thus characterizing the well-known unbalanced three-phase systems. This operational condition is due to a number of factors, some intrinsic to the supply systems, and others to the characteristics of the fed loads. In view of the recognized negative impacts associated with improper operations of the networks and their components, as well as effects on the efficiency of the electricity supply and consumption process, regulatory agencies have been aware in relation to this indicator of the electrical power quality. For these reasons, boundary values are often found in national and international regulations. In such circumstances, once such standards are exceeded, measures to mitigate or conform to established power quality standards should be used. To meet these requirements, several strategies are known and available in the market, however, when confronting the benefits with the costs of some solutions, the motivation for the search for more attractive strategies appears. In this way, the present research is focused as the main target in this dissertation, which is aimed at proposing an imbalance compensator based on low-cost commercial static components, associated with a switching and control strategy to suit dynamic conditions normally imposed by the loads. Todavia, as situações encontradas em campo, via de regra, evidenciam dissemelhanças entre as grandezas elétricas, caracterizando, assim, os conhecidos sistemas trifásicos desequilibrados. Tal condição operativa se deve a uma série de fatores, alguns intrínsecos aos sistemas de suprimentos, e outros, às características das cargas alimentadas. Diante dos reconhecidos impactos negativos associados com operações impróprias das redes e seus componentes, assim como também efeitos sobre a eficiência do processo de fornecimento e consumo da energia elétrica, os agentes reguladores têm se mantido vigilantes em relação a esse indicador da qualidade da energia elétrica. Por tais motivos, valores limítrofes são frequentemente encontrados nas regulamentações nacionais e internacionais. Nessas circunstâncias, uma vez ultrapassados tais padrões, medidas para mitigação ou adequação aos padrões de qualidade estabelecidos devem ser prontamente empregadas. Para o atendimento a tais requisitos, são vários os recursos conhecidos e disponibilizados no mercado, entretanto, ao se confrontar os benefícios com os custos de algumas soluções, surge a motivação para a busca de estratégias mais atrativas. Nesse particular situa-se a presente pesquisa feita nessa dissertação, a qual encontra-se voltada para a proposição de um dispositivo compensador de desequilíbrios à base de componentes estáticos comerciais de baixo custo, associados com uma estratégia de chaveamento e controle para adequação às condições dinâmicas normalmente impostas pelas cargas. Tendo em vista que a pesquisa em pauta se apresenta como uma proposição inicial, a mesma é consubstanciada pelos seus fundamentos teóricos, e o processo avaliativo da eficácia do seu desempenho é feita computacionalmente
