The double in Romanticism: the example of E.T. A. Hoffmann

This study aims to point out causes and ways in which the phenomenon of double becomes one of the symbols of German Romanticism. In order to do so, the historical-social context between the end of the eighteenth century and the mid-nineteenth century was revisited in order to discuss the particularities of the panorama in which the subject was permeated, and it is possible to notice that the outbreak of social crisis also reverberated for the conflicting existence of the subject with his "selves", that is, with its fragmentations and divisions. The main characteristics of this artistic movement allowed to understand what the romantic man sought and felt. Thus, some of the interfaces of Romanticism with psychoanalysis aimed to consider the psychic antagonisms as well as the apprehension of the manifestations of the nocturnal side of the human soul, the aspects of the unconscious and the fragmentation of the subject, making it a "divided": a part of his being is conscious and the other part, conscious, preoccupations that anticipated psychoanalysis. The manifestations of the double in the literature of the German Romanticism had as a highlight the writer E. T. A. Hoffmann. And through the interpretative reading of his tales: The lost image, Doctor Trabacchio and The Doubles, have been traversed the natures for the manifestations of such phenomenon, which oscillated both for the non-recognition of self, and for the utopian necessity of the romantic subject's reunion with himself. The manifestations of the double thus evidence the romantic need to perceive it as pertinent to the "real and true self", as ambition for the principle of the absolute. Hoffmann, however, develops in his fiction that the subject is a self in itself and fragmented in itself - "divided" which makes of its existence the perpetual conflict of being, which seeks the understanding of a unity tied to the concerning its origin and its essence. From this, there is the possibility of the encounter with the double, as the "other self" or as the "other selves", in order to have the permanent construction of the subject and the eternal search for its social and psychic fragments. Even with the possibility of observing a "particular form of unity," it divides itself. Symbolically, life can be a literary creation, which offers man, even though he is "divided" the opportunity for him to be a writer of himself.Dissertação (Mestrado)Este trabalho tem por objetivo apontar causas e modos pelos quais o fenômeno do duplo se torna um dos símbolosdo Romantismo Alemão. Para tanto, o contexto histórico-social entre o final do século XVIII e meados do século XIX foi revisitado a fim de discorrer sobre as particularidades do panorama em que o sujeito estava permeado. Assim, foi possível notar que a eclosão da crise social também repercutiu para a existência conflituosa do sujeito com os seus “eus”, isto é, com as suas fragmentações e com as suas divisões. As principais características desse movimento artístico permitiram compreender o que buscava e sentia o homem romântico. Sendo assim, algumas das interfaces realizadas do Romantismo com a psicanálise visaram considerar os antagonismos psíquicos, bem como a apreensão das manifestações do lado noturno da alma humana, os aspectos do inconsciente e da fragmentação do sujeito, tornando-o um “divíduo”: uma parte de seu ser é consciente e a outra parte, inconsciente, preocupações estas que anteciparam a psicanálise. As manifestações do duplo na literatura do Romantismo Alemão tiveram como destaque o escritor E. T. A. Hoffmann e, por meio da leitura interpretativa de seus contos, A imagem perdida, O Doutor Trabacchio e Os Duplos foram percorridas as naturezas para as manifestações de tal fenômeno, que oscilou tanto para o não reconhecimento de si, como para a necessidade utópica de reencontro do sujeito romântico consigo mesmo. As manifestações do duplo evidenciam, portanto, a necessidade romântica de percebê-lo como pertinente ao “Eu real e verdadeiro”, enquanto ambição pelo princípio do absoluto. Contudo, Hoffmann desenvolve em sua ficção que o sujeito é um ser em si e de si mesmo fragmentado – um “divíduo”, que faz de sua existência o perpétuo conflito do ser, que almeja pela busca de compreensão de uma unidade atrelada perante aos lutos referentes quanto a sua origem e quanto a sua essência. A partir disso, existe a possibilidade do encontro com o duplo, como o “outro de si” ou como os “outros eus”, a fim de haver a permanente construção do sujeito e a eterna busca por seus fragmentos sociais e psíquicos. Mesmo com a possibilidade de observação de uma “forma particular de unidade”, esta se divide em si mesma. Simbolicamente, a vida pode ser uma criação literária, que oferece ao homem, mesmo ele sendo um “divíduo”, a oportunidade de que ele seja um escritor de si
