The clothing in the serie untitled film stills of Cindy Sherman

This research analyzes the clothing in the work of North American artist Cindy Sherman, focusing on early works of her career and, especially, on the presence and use of the clothing in the making of the series Untitled Film Stills. It is addressed, here, the construction of Sherman’s portraits, through one of its main components: the clothing. To do this, I tried to cast a glance on her early work, observing how the artist discovered that clothes could function on her work as a method to deliver a message to the world; and how experimenting with clothes and makeup was evolving, until it reached the maturity seen in Untitled Film Stills. The situation in which Cindy Sherman photographs Untitled Film Stills series is also discussed in this dissertation, with focus on the important issues of this period, which are reflected in this series: the movement of feminist artists; photography versus painting; the appropriation of media images. From groups that refer to certain stereotypes, selected from the series, the analysis started from the principle that clothing is subject to other elements, such as theatricality, the scenarios, pose, makeup and framing. We also noticed how the clothing was, often, the guiding element for the development of the characterization of a character. It was also of our interest, here, to realize how the clothing, as an additional factor, which once was in decay, in portraits, can be a revisited and revised manner of expression in contemporary art.Dissertação (Mestrado)A presente pesquisa analisa a obra da artista Cindy Sherman com o foco nos primeiros trabalhos de sua carreira e, principalmente, acerca da presença e dos usos do vestuário na constituição da série Untitled Film Stills. Trata-se, aqui, de abordar a construção dos retratos de Sherman através de um de seus principais elementos constitutivos: a vestimenta. Para tal, procurei lançar um olhar em suas primeiras obras, percebendo como a artista descobriu que as roupas poderiam funcionar em seu trabalho como uma forma de comunicar uma mensagem ao mundo; e como as experimentações com vestimentas e maquiagens foram evoluindo até ela atingir a maturidade percebida na série Untitled Film Stills. A conjuntura na qual Cindy Sherman fotografa também é abordada nesta dissertação, com foco nas questões importantes do período que refletem na série em questão: o movimento de artistas feministas; a fotografia versus a pintura; a apropriação das imagens midiáticas. A partir de grupos que remetem a certos estereótipos, selecionados dentro da série, as análises partiram do princípio de que a vestimenta está condicionada a outros elementos, como a teatralidade, os cenários, a pose, a maquiagem, o enquadramento. Percebemos também como a vestimenta foi, muitas vezes, o elemento norteador para a elaboração e caracterização de uma personagem. Interessou-nos aqui, também, perceber como a vestimenta enquanto elemento, outrora em decadência em retratos, pode ser um meio de expressão revisitado e revisado na arte contemporânea
