Falling into the trap: the World Cup as strategy of state in the twenty-first century

Since 2002, many nations from four continents have accepted the challenge to spend some billion of dollars in the purpose of hosting the World Cup of soccer. Brazil alone is estimated to have spent an amount between R$ 25,5 billion and R$ 28 billion to host the World Cup of 2014. In this work, both the reasons in favour and against hosting the tournament will be measured: in the one hand, the sport’s capacity on allowing the governments to alter the national identity and insert themselves in the International Community, added to a supposed possibility to use this mega event with the intent of providing development, should direct the governments towards the decision of hosting the World Cup; in the other hand, the corruption and the heavy demands of Fifa, added to the lack of planning and transparency from the governments, turn this decision onerous to the public treasury and to the society.Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (Graduação)Desde 2002, alguns países em quatro continentes do planeta se propuseram a abrir o talão de cheques, gastando bilhões de dólares para receber a Copa do Mundo de futebol. Somente o Brasil deve ter gasto algo entre R$ 25,5 e R$ 28 bilhões para ser a sede do Mundial em 2014. Neste trabalho, os pesos favoráveis e contrários serão colocados na balança: a capacidade do esporte em permitir aos governos ressignificar a identidade nacional e se inserir internacionalmente, somada a uma suposta possibilidade em utilizar o Megaevento para gerar desenvolvimento, pesam a favor da decisão de sediar a Copa do Mundo; ao passo em que e a corrupção e as exigências da Fifa, somadas à falta de planejamento e transparência dos governos, tornam essa decisão onerosa para os cofres públicos e para a sociedade
