Determination of the most suitable welding parameters for union of thin wall tubes by the coated electrode process

This work refers to an empirical determination of best SMAW welding parameters for pipes made of SAE-AISI 4130 steel, with thin wall (1,25 mm) and 19,05 mm diameter to be used by the mini-baja team of Federal University of Uberlandia. All welding tests were made manually with the intention to demonstrate the advantages and limitations for a future application by students of the mini-baja team. It was concluded that the more suitable electrode would be the rutile electrode of the E308 type (for stainless steel), because it is easier to weld and it offers a better weld bead finishing. The welding current adjustment for the 2,5 mm electrode should be around 60 A. Thus, the more recommended process to be used during a competition would be the SMAW because the power source and electrodes are easy to be transported and due to the fact that it offers a better protection of the active zone against winds. The tests performed showed that a trained student can indeed perform a welding with acceptable quality by using rutile electrode of the E308 type of 2,5 mm diameter. It is recommended to use an inverter-type power source that provides direct current and not a welding transformer, since alternating current impairs process stability.Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (Graduação)Esse trabalho refere-se à determinação empírica dos melhores parâmetros de soldagem por eletrodo revestido de tubos, aço SAE-AISI 4130, com paredes finas (1,25 mm) e diâmetro de 19,05 mm usados pela equipe mini-baja da Universidade Federal de Uberlândia. Todos os testes de soldagem foram realizados manualmente com a intenção de demonstrar as vantagens e limitações para uma futura aplicação pelos alunos da equipe de mini-baja. Concluiu-se que o eletrodo mais adequado seria o eletrodo rutílico do tipo E308 (para soldagem de aços inoxidáveis), por apresentar maior facilidade da soldagem e melhor acabamento da solda. A corrente ajustada para o eletrodo de diâmetro de 2,5 mm deve ser por volta de 60 A. Além disso, ER é o processo mais recomendado para ser usado no local da competição, pelo fácil transporte da fonte e eletrodos e pelo fato de oferecer melhor proteção da zona ativa contraventos. Os testes realizados mostraram que um aluno treinado pode executar uma solda com a qualidade de cordão aceitável usando o eletrodo rutílico do tipo E308 de diâmetro de 2,5 mm. É recomendado usar uma fonte de energia do tipo inversora que fornece a corrente contínua e não um transformador de soldagem, pois a corrente alternada prejudica a estabilidade do processo
