Evaluation of profile of breastfeeding among working women assured by a formal private health plan

Breastfeeding is among the main practices for the establishment of proper nutrition in the first two years of life. However, performing this practice balancing paid work outside the home is in great difficulty experienced by millions of women. This study aims to understand the pattern of breastfeeding among working women assured by a formal private health insurance, in order to know risk factors for early weaning, bringing these to focus discussion. This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study with quantitative approach conducted between June 2010 and June 2011. The study population was composed of formal working women 249 held by a private health plan with children in age between 5 and 6 months of life. Recorded telephone interview was conducted for data collection and the questionnaire used in this study was based on the Nursing and municipalities Project (AMAMUNIC) of the Institute of health of São Paulo. Were evaluated variables that interfered in breastfeeding. Statistical analysis was performed using the univariate analysis and multiple linear regression, considering the p 0.05. The prevalence of breastfeeding (AM) and exclusive breastfeeding (AME) found among children under six months was 71.7 and 7.4, respectively. In this particular group of women the introduction of artificial milk in maternity, the use of a pacifier and bottle or chuca and characteristics of the newly-born, including birth weight, sex of child, hospitalization and high time, negatively influenced in breastfeeding rates. Protective factor was the exclusive breastfeeding in the first day at home. The AME found were considered low, indicating the need to establish appropriate policies for working women who breastfeed, thus making reconciliation of breastfeeding and returning to work successful practices.Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Minas GeraisMestre em Ciências da SaúdeO aleitamento materno figura entre as principais práticas para o estabelecimento da nutrição adequada nos dois primeiros anos de vida. Este estudo visa conhecer o padrão de aleitamento materno entre mulheres trabalhadoras formais asseguradas por um plano de saúde privado, objetivando conhecer fatores de risco para o desmame precoce, trazendo estes para foco de discussão. Tratou-se de um estudo descritivo, transversal com abordagem quantitativa realizado entre Junho de 2010 e Junho de 2011. A população do estudo foi composta por 249 mulheres trabalhadoras formais asseguradas por um plano de saúde privado com filhos em idade entre 5 e 6 meses de vida. Foi realizada entrevista telefônica gravada para a coleta de dados e o questionário utilizado neste estudo teve como base o Projeto Amamentação e Municípios (AMAMUNIC) do Instituto de Saúde de São Paulo. Foram avaliadas as variáveis que podem interferir no aleitamento materno. Foi realizada a análise estatística utilizando-se as análises univariada e regressão linear múltipla, considerando-se o p< 0,05. As prevalências de aleitamento materno (AM) e de aleitamento materno exclusivo (AME) encontradas entre menores de seis meses foi de 71,7% e 7,4%, respectivamente. Neste grupo específico de mulheres a introdução de leite artificial na maternidade, o uso de chupeta e de mamadeira ou chuca, e as características do recém nascido, os quais peso ao nascimento, sexo da criança, internação e tempo de alta, influenciaram negativamente nos índices de aleitamento materno. Foi fator protetor o aleitamento materno exclusivo no primeiro dia em casa. Os índices de AME encontrados foram considerados baixos, indicando a necessidade de se estabelecerem políticas adequadas para mulheres trabalhadoras que amamentam, tornando assim a conciliação da amamentação e o retorno ao trabalho práticas bem sucedidas
