Hong Kong's Identity Formation and its impacts on the relationship with the People's Republic of China

This paper seeks to understand the impact of the formation of an identity in Hong Kong over the relationship of the people of the city with their compatriots of the mainland and with the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The city of Hong Kong became a British colony because of the victory of Great Britain against China in the 1st Opium War and had been used as an instrument of the British commercial politics during the colonization. Some people had created a sense of identity in the first years of the colonization, however, the majority of the Chinese believed that Hong Kong was just a temporary home. Because of this mentality, the construction of an identity was only possible after the Communist Revolution in China as a consequence of the mentality change that occurred in the colony; said that, the major part of the immigrants that had moved to the city after this period were trying to establish themselves in the city. The Communist Revolution broke the barrier which had been preventing the formation of an identity, while the economic development that happened after that, along with the governance model which had been conceived by the British, created the bases of a Civic National Identity in Hong Kong. In 1997, due to results of the negotiations between Great Britain and China, the city had to be reintegrated under the model “one country, two systems” which determined that Popular’s Republic of China would have to maintain the autonomy of Hong Kong for 50 years. The situation of Hong Kong after the handover can be split in two moments. In the first moment, slowly, people started to identify itself more with China and less with Hong Kong; but, this process started to be reverted when the population realized that the influence of Chinese central government was soaring fast, especially after 2009. Nowadays, there has been a radicalization of part of the population, and localist parties have emerged in the city and some of them demand the independence of Hong Kong.Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (Graduação)Essa monografia busca entender o impacto da formação de uma identidade em Hong Kong sobre o relacionamento que as pessoas da cidade possuem em relação a seus compatriotas do continente e com a República Popular da China (RPC). A cidade de Hong Kong se tornou uma colônia britânica por conta da vitória da Grã-Bretanha sobre a China na 1ª Guerra do Ópio e foi um instrumento da política comercial britânica durante a colonização. Algumas pessoas criaram um senso de identidade nos primeiros anos da colonização, no entanto, grande parte dos chineses acreditavam que Hong Kong era um lar temporário. Por conta dessa mentalidade, só foi possível a formação de uma identidade na cidade após a Revolução Comunista na China, como consequência da mudança de mentalidade que ocorreu na colônia; nesse sentido, a maior parte dos imigrantes que se mudaram para a cidade após esse período buscavam se estabelecer na cidade. A Revolução Comunista quebrou uma barreira que impedia a formação de uma identidade na cidade, enquanto o desenvolvimento econômico que aconteceu depois disso, juntamente com o modelo de governança adotado pela Grã-Bretanha, criaram as bases de uma identidade nacional cívica em Hong Kong. Em 1997, devido a desdobramentos das negociações entre a Grã-Bretanha e a China, a cidade teve que ser reintegrada sob o modelo “um país, dois sistemas” que determinava que a RPC deveria manter a autonomia de Hong Kong por um período de 50 anos. A situação de Hong Kong após a reintegração pode ser dividida em dois momentos. No primeiro momento, lentamente, a população começou a se identificar cada vez mais com a China e menos com Hong Kong; porém, esse processo começou a se inverter quando a população percebeu que a interferência do governo central chinês estava aumentando rapidamente, principalmente após 2009. Atualmente, houve a radicalização de parte da população, surgiram partidos localistas na cidade e alguns desses partidos demandam a independência da cidade
