This paper seeks to understand the impact of the formation of an identity in Hong Kong over the relationship of the people of the city with their compatriots of the mainland and with the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The city of Hong Kong became a British colony because of the victory of Great Britain against China in the 1st Opium War and had been used as an instrument of the British commercial politics during the colonization. Some people had created a sense of identity in the first years of the colonization, however, the majority of the Chinese believed that Hong Kong was just a temporary home.
