Mouth breathing syndrome: literature review

The mouth breathing is defined as a respiratory disorder in which there is a partial replacement of the nasal breath occurs by predominantly mouth breathing. Mouth breathing when exist in the child's growth and development phase, could interfere with the craniofacial growth pattern, could also lead to dentofacial and stomatognathic changes, and reflect negatively on cognitive and pisicossocial aspects. Due to the serious systemic and developmental changes that mouth breathing can produce, the treatment by a multidisciplinary team is extremely important. According to the articles researched, mouth breathing has harmful effects on the growth and development of craniofacial structures. The obstruction of the upper airway associate with the adaptation of airflow through the mouth, leads neuromuscular changes that trigger harmful effects on the process of facial growth, causing undesirable impact on speech, eating, breathing, posture, sleep quality and even on performance school. Mouth breathing should be considered as a risk factor for the development of malocclusions such as open bite, crossbite, among other changes. The objective of this work is carry out a literature review, focusing on the organic causes of mouth breathing, its consequences and possible treatment plans, updating the scientific knowledge in order to contribute to the clinical practice of professionals of different specialties who are involved in the follow up of mouth breathers.Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (Graduação)A respiração bucal é definida como uma desordem respiratória na qual ocorre a substituição parcial da respiração nasal por uma respiração predominantemente bucal. A respiração bucal quando presente na fase de crescimento e desenvolvimento da criança pode interferir no padrão de crescimento craniofacial, podendo também trazer modificações dentofaciais e das funções estomatognáticas, além de refletir negativamente nos aspectos cognitivos e pisicossociais. Em função das graves alterações sistêmicas e de desenvolvimento que a respiração bucal pode produzir, torna-se extremamente importante o tratamento por uma equipe multidisciplinar. A respiração bucal pode acarretar efeitos nocivos sobre o crescimento e desenvolvimento das estruturas craniofaciais. A obstrução da via aérea superior concomitantemente com a adaptação do fluxo aéreo por via bucal, promovem alterações neuromusculares que desencadeiam efeitos prejudiciais sobre o processo de crescimento facial trazendo impacto indesejável na fala, alimentação, respiração, postura, qualidade do sono e até mesmo no desempenho escolar. A respiração bucal deve ser considerada como um fator de risco para o desenvolvimento das más oclusões como mordida aberta, mordida cruzada, entre outras alterações. O objetivo deste trabalho é realizar uma revisão de literatura com enfoque nas causas orgânicas da respiração bucal, suas consequências e possíveis planos de tratamento, atualizando o conhecimento científico de forma a contribuir para a prática clínica de profissionais de diversas especialidades que estão envolvidas no acompanhamento de pacientes respiradores bucais
