Portrait of Auguste Gabriel Godefroy: Education and Childhood in the Work of Chardin

This research analyzes the work Portrait of Auguste Gabriel Godefroy (1741) by the French artist Jean-Siméon Chardin. The painting belongs to the São Paulo Art Museum Assis Chateaubriand - MASP - and we are interested in being related to the discussion about education in childhood in the eighteenth century, in particular the child between homework and fun. It is proposed to understand the multiple senses of this painting, the relations with French painting of the eighteenth century, the repercussion of such an image and its apprehensions. The issues surrounding the acquisition of the painting by the MASP, and the critical and reception literature will also be addressed. The aim is also to understand the approach to the theme by different artists of the same period, as well as the appropriation of the image and the central motto, the boy and the top, multiplied in supports like book covers, posters and cinematographic productions.CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível SuperiorDissertação (Mestrado)Esta pesquisa analisa a obra Retrato de Auguste Gabriel Godefroy (1741) do artista francês Jean-Siméon Chardin. O quadro pertence ao Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand – MASP – e nos interessa por se relacionar à discussão sobre a educação na infância no século XVIII, em particular à criança entre o dever escolar e a diversão. Propõe-se entender os sentidos múltiplos dessa pintura, as relações com a pintura francesa do século XVIII, a repercussão de tal imagem e suas apreensões. Também serão tratadas as questões que envolvem a aquisição do quadro pelo MASP, além da literatura crítica e de recepção. Objetiva-se ainda entender a abordagem ao tema por diferentes artistas do mesmo período, bem como a apropriação da imagem e do mote central, o menino e o pião, multiplicada em suportes como capas de livro, cartazes e produções cinematográficas
