IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF MATHEMATICS LEARNING THROUGH THE APPLICATION OF PROBLEM BASED LEARNING (PBL) MODEL WITH SCIENTIFIC APPROACH IN GRADE X MIPA 1 AT SMAN 2 PAREPARE

ABSTRACT This study aims at improving 1) students’ learning activities in mathematics learning through Problem Based Learning (PBL) learning model with scientific approach in grade X MIPA 1 at SMAN 2 Parepare; 2) the mathematics learning outcomes through PBL model with scientific approach in grade X MIPA 1 at SMAN 2 Parepare and 3) students' responses on mathematics learning through PBL with scientific approach in grade X MIPA 1 at SMAN 2 Parepare. This study is a classroom action research conducted at SMAN 2 Parepare. The data collection technique in this study was a test technique in the form of test used to determine the result of learning mathematics, observation techniques in the form of observation sheets to observe the implementation of learning and students’ activities, the questionnaire techniques was the form of questionnaire for students responses to determine students’ responses to learning models applied. The data collected were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The conclusions of the study are 1) the increased percentage of students’ activities from the cycle 1 by 63.59% (high criteria) in cycle I increased to 71.79% (high criteria) in cycle II; 2) the increased of mathematics learning outcomes after applying PBL model with scientific approach from pre-action, cycle I to cycle II which covered a) the average of learning outcomes from pre-action is 55.3 (low criteria ) to 83.25 (high criteria) in cycle I increased to 90.91 (very high criteria) in cycle II; b) the increased percentage of learning outcomes completeness of student from preaction were 13 students (37.1%) increased in cycle I to 28 students (80%) and in cycle II increased to 33 students (94.3%) with the achievement of classical completeness as expected by 85% who obtained ≥ 60; 3) the increased response of students to the application of PBL models with a classical scientific approach from pre-action of 53.5% (negative) increased to 79.2% (positive) in cycle I and to 88 , 9% (positive) in cycle II
