Héritage et ruptures : Négociations identitaires du héros dans les adaptations cinématographiques de Devdas.

There are few figures in world cinema which the filmmakers return to as often as Devdas. Born at the beginning of the last century in the pen of the Bengali writer Sarat Chandra Chatterjee, this story of a tragic love triangle, has had a singular destiny. The popular success of the novel, translated upon its release in almost all of the Indian languages, has been expanding rapidly across the country thanks to many film adaptations. This story of unrequited love has been assimilated with popular mythology in the collective consciousness of Indians. In a century, “Devdas” has become a generic term for a specific character: a lovesick, passive and indecisive rich man sinking in alcohol to death. The identity of the character created and recreated by successive adaptations seems to convey values that enable the Indian public to project itself in it without ever being able to solve the mystery of his unease and his sense of resignation. In this article, I propose to come back to the figure of “Devdas” and compare its identity construction through four major adaptations.Il existe peu de figures dans le cinéma mondial vers lesquels les réalisateurs reviennent aussi souvent que celle de Devdas. Née au début du siècle dernier sous la plume de l'écrivain bengali Sarat Chandra Chatterjee, l'histoire d'un triangle amoureux tragique, aura un destin singulier. Le succès populaire du roman, traduit dès sa parution dans la plupart des langues indiennes, s'étend rapidement sur l'ensemble du territoire appuyé par de nombreuses adaptations cinématographiques. Cette histoire d'amour inaccompli est portée, dans la conscience collective indienne, au niveau de la mythologie populaire. En un siècle, « Devdas » est devenu un terme générique pour désigner un caractère précis : un homme riche en mal d'amour, passif et indécis qui sombre dans l'alcool à en mourir. Dans cet article, je propose de revenir sur la figure de « Devdas » et de comparer sa construction identitaire à travers quatre adaptations majeures
