: Light in transition(s): ecologization and democratization of the urban lighting planning

National audienceWhile in terms of urban convenience, safety and aesthetics, the contributions of artificial light are widely accepted, a diversity of negative impacts have been highlighted since the 1970s in multiple fields, from astronomy to health, ecology and economics. Amateur astronomers, doctors and ecologists are questioning the validity of intensive and homogeneous uses of artificial lighting, now understood in terms of pollution by many scientific studies. By making the understanding of the needs — both human and non-human — of darkness a new focal point, this environmental requalification of urban lighting is accompanied by a democratization of its factory, through use and at different territorial scales.Si en termes de commodité, de sécurité et d'esthétique urbaines, les apports de la lumière artificielle sont largement admis, une diversité d'impacts négatifs sont mis en avant depuis les années 1970 dans des champs multiples, de l'astronomie à la santé en passant par l'écologie ou l'économie. Les astronomes amateurs, les médecins ou encore les écologues, questionnent le bien-fondé des usages intensifs et homogènes de l'éclairage artificiel, désormais appréhendé en termes de pollution par de nombreux travaux scientifiques. En faisant de la compréhension des besoins — humains et non-humains — d'obscurité un nouveau point focal, cette requalification environnementale de l'éclairage urbain s'accompagne d'une démocratisation de sa fabrique, par l'usage et à différentes échelles territoriales
