Le vignoble périurbain : entre préoccupations locales et contexte global. Exemple de Vouvray (France)

International audienceThe wine industry has been confronted with changing issues over time, but has proved able to adapt, becoming the second-largest contributor to the French trade balance. Strategies have been put in place in wine regions to ensure vineyards’ sustainability or emergence. In order to examine these strategies in greater detail, we focus in this article on a peri-urban wine region (the vineyards of the Vouvray protected designation of origin), which faces different issues, in particular the pressure exerted by the growth of a nearby urban area – now considered as métropole or “metropolis” in administrative terms – namely Tours, in the Loire Valley in west-central France. How can these vineyards be maintained spatially in the face of other types of land use with more immediate economic and financial benefits? How can the area preserve its identity without missing out on the advances and opportunities of modernity? An analysis of the landscape dynamics at play shows that the threat of urbanization is more a fear than a reality, but only because the Vouvray vineyards have resisted relatively successfully. First, they adapted their production, by focusing on quality. They now also benefit from a new context, which elevates these vineyards to the rank of spaces with high heritage and landscape value. The case study of Vouvray shows that these peri-urban vineyards lie at the heart of multiple stakes and challenges, involving many actors and a “nesting” of scales, from the local to the global. To continue to survive, the vineyards must adapt, taking into account this pluralistic context. They must take advantage of favorable elements of this context (increased interest in landscapes and wine heritage, development of wine tourism, desire for higher-quality products) in order to enhance their value and deflect threats (urbanization, competition from new wines).Confrontée à des enjeux qui ont évolué au cours du temps, la filière viticole a su s’adapter, devenant le deuxième contributeur de la balance commerciale française. Afin d’interroger les stratégies mises en place autour des vignobles, pour garantir leur pérennité ou leur émergence, nous nous intéressons, dans cet article, à un vignoble périurbain (AOC Vouvray), devant faire face, entre autres, à la pression exercée par la croissance d’une agglomération devenue métropole (Tours, France). Comment se maintenir spatialement face à d’autres types d’occupation des sols aux retombées économiques et financières plus immédiates ? Comment garder son identité sans manquer le train de la modernité ? L’analyse des dynamiques paysagères montre que la menace de l’urbanisation est plus une crainte qu’une réalité mais parce que le vignoble vouvrillon a relativement bien résisté. Il a tout d’abord adapté sa production, vers la recherche de qualité. Désormais, il profite aussi du nouveau contexte, qui propulse le vignoble au rang d’espace à forte valeur patrimoniale et paysagère. Le cas étudié montre que le vignoble, qui plus est périurbain, est au centre d’enjeux multiples, de l’implication de nombreux acteurs et d’un emboîtement d’échelles du local au global. Pour se maintenir, les vignobles doivent s’adapter, en prenant en compte ce contexte pluriel. Ils doivent profiter des avantages (engouement pour les paysages et le patrimoine viticoles, essor de l’œnotourisme, exigences de qualité) pour se valoriser et repousser les menaces (urbanisation, concurrence des vins nouveaux)
