Fraunhofer IFAM Dresden uses 3D screen printing, a modified screen printing process based on a powder-binder mixture which is printed layer-by-layer to the desired shape followed by debinding and a conventional sintering step. It is a printing technique that allows the mass production of metallic and ceramic parts. Laboratory machine systems reach build rates of 20 to 50 cm3/h using a printing area of 180x260 cm. Modified production lines for 2D screen printing (used e.g. in the solar industry) can reach values up to 300 cm3/h. The industrialization of this process requires the knowledge of the achievable tolerances for their production with low error rates.
