Following a stratigraphic approach, the research mainly focuses on the identification and the analysis of military signs inside the St. Elia promontory in Cagliari. The whole city, being an ancient coastal stronghold, is highly stratified with defensive structures belonging from a wide chronological range (from 11th to 20th century), but in St. Elia and St. Bartolomeo hills there is a really impressive density of military areas, a large part of them still in use. After a detailed inventory of military historical preexistence, the study pieces together the vulnerable mosaic of defensive remains, reconnecting the traces of the several defensive phases, depending on the several changes in the Mediterranean political background.
