The role of the community in the generation and maintenance of social movements, despite its intuitive appeal, has long been a neglected area of study. The principal reason for this neglect has been the undervalued conception of community that has dominated the field of social movements. This project will address this neglect in two ways. First, it will explore the validity of a recently proposed theoretical model (the "indigenous perspective") that shows promise as a framework for understanding the role of community in social protest. Second, this project will focus on the continued involvement of the Chicano community in social protest over time demonstrating that community organizations were vital and evolving repositories of the group's...
