The Word of God is an ecumenical Christian community located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The community is a product of the Catholic charismatic renewal, the neopentecostal movement within the Roman Catholic Church. Like other charismatics, its members espouse and practice baptism in the Holy Spirit and the related gifts or charisms, including tongues, healing and prophecy. The Word of God was founded as an egalitarian, lay prayer fellowship in 1967. By 1971 it had evolved into a community in which members shared their daily lives under the direction of a small group of leaders, who exercised limited authority over a few, narrowly defined aspects of the group's common life.
