International tourism has been a fast growing business. International tourist arrivals have increased from 69.3 million (1960) to 159.7 million (1970), 280 million (1980), and 300 million (1990). By the turn of the century (year 2000), the number of international tourists is expected to rise to 500 million, which is worth about US$ 300 million each year. Presently this accounts for 6% of world trade. The average annual growth rate, however, has shown a downward trend over the past few decades.peer-reviewe
