Background: Thalamocortical EEG rhythms in gamma (30–80Hz) and high-gamma (80–200Hz) ranges have been linked to arousal and conscious processing. We have recently shown that isoflurane and propofol cause a concentration dependent attenuation of the power of these fast (50¬–200Hz) rhythms in the ventroposteromedial nucleus (VPM) of the thalamus.
