The contribution of this thesis is a novel design of radio-frequency (RF) coils for simultaneous transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Previously, TMS and fMRI were interleaved by using a custom-built MRI coil that was mounted onto a TMS coil. Such design was capable of acquiring functional images with good signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). However, the RF coil provided limited image coverage since it was designed to be attached to a TMS stimulator in a single location. The here-reported design includes a coil array in a fixed position covering the entire brain – contouring to a subject's head – allowing the researcher to position the TMS anywhere without loss of signal.
