This study sought to advance theory and research on organizational configurations by identifying contingencies that promote different forms of configurational change. A theoretical framework was elaborated that (1) used a typology of hospital governance to select configurational elements and generate predictions about the types of configurations likely to be observed; (2) clarified the meaning and operationalization of the concept of configurational change; and (3) speculated about the implications of performance pressure and organizational inertia on board composition, structure, and activity.
