Many authors have emphasized the role that concepts play as basic building blocks of cognition. This suggests two things. First, if one wishes to understand cognition, one must understand how concepts are acquired and represented. Second, if an understanding of concepts is critical primarily because it serves as the basis for a general understanding of cognition, then a theory of concepts is most meaningful when developed in the context of a general cognitive theory and when connected to as many psychological phenomena as possible.
