Aim: To identify the incidence of and risk factors for mastitis, and to investigate breastfeeding practices in Shiraz, Iran. Method: 700 mothers were recruited after delivery and followed-up to 26 weeks. Results: Incidence of mastitis was 18.6%. C-section and not experiencing skin to skin contact were predictive of delayed initiation of breastfeeding, in-hospital formula use and prelacteal feeding. Using a pacifier was the strongest predictor of shorter duration of exclusive, full and any breastfeeding
