Chloramination is used to reduce the formation of regulated disinfection by-products (i.e. trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids), or to avoid biofouling of membranes during wastewater reclamation processes. However, chloramination favors the formation of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a human carcinogen.
