This chapter introduces the basic building blocks of a clinical magnetic resonance imaging machine and illustrates their function during image generation. Topics covered include the main magnet, gradient and shim system, radiofrequency chain and coils, as well as additional system components. The advantages and disadvantages of different implementations of the individual units will be explained and current state-of-the-art designs are summarised
