Impacto de aerosoles atmosféricos sobre microorganismos marinos en el litoral de Barcelona

Several studies have shown a stimulatory effect of those atmospheric nutrients on phytoplankton but the effect on the microbial community has been less addressed. Also, the role of airborne microorganisms is a hot topic in marine research, since when deposited they might contribute to increase microbial diversity of marine ecosystems. In order to address these issues, the stimulatory effect of atmospheric deposition on marine activity due to organic nutrients and the possible enrichment in microorganisms, we carried out the APOLLO1 experiment. The experiment was performed during 13th to 17th of March with the aim to characterize and evaluate the impact of atmospheric aerosols on the marine microbial communities of the littoral of Barcelona. The experiment consisted of a set of treatments: sea water (SW), sea water filtered by a 0.8μm filter (0.8SW), artificial sea water (ASW) without dust and the same treatments with the addition of dust (D) (SWD, 0.8SWD, ASWD).
