Geomorphology and Quaternary deformations related to fault zones in the Motril-Djibouti Marginal Plateau

T. ... et al.-- Inciativa Ibérica para el Estudio de las Fallas Activas, Tercera Reunión Ibérica sobre Fallas Activas y Paleosismología IBERFAULT 2018 - Third Iberian Meeting on Active Faults and Paleoseismology, 11-13 June 2018, Alicante, Spain.-- 4 pages, 2 figures[EN] The seafloor of the Alboran Sea shows morphological evidence of the activity of several tectonic structures that basically correspond to two large families of conjugated strike-slip faults, the first of WNW-ESE to NW-SE trend and right-lateral movement, and the second of NNE-SSW to NE-SW trend and left-lateral movement, likewise it has been recognized the presence of N-S normal faults and NE-SW anticline folds. This paper is dedicated to the detailed study of NNE-SSW fault zones on the surface of the Motril-Djibouti marginal plateau, northern margin of Alboran Sea basin, by means of multibeam bathymetric data and subsurface profiles acquired with parametric echosounders and high resolution seismic (airgun, sparker), which allow analyze their strong surficial deformation. There is geomorphological evidence of at least eight NNE-SSW fault zones. They are characterized on the seafloor by corridors constituted by fault escarpments and tectonic depressions, both grabens and half-grabens, as minor pull-apart basins. The corridors lengths vary between 18 and 48 km and their widths between 0.2 and 3.9 km. These morphotectonic features are related to a dense secondary faulting of normal component and N-S trend associated with the strike-slip movement of the main fault. These fault zones currently assume a large part of the regional seismicity, and the southern one corresponds to the Al Idrissi fault prolongation[ES] El objetivo de este trabajo es el estudio detallado de las zonas de falla sinistras de tendencia NNE-SSO que deforman la superficie de la plataforma marginal de Motril-Djibouti en el margen septentrional de la cuenca del Mar de Alborán. La geomorfología de los datos batimétricos multihaz se ha analizado con herramientas de Sistema de Información Geográfica y la estructura superficial mediante perfiles de sonda paramétrica y de sísmica de alta resolución. Los resultados muestran al menos ocho zonas de fallas caracterizadas como corredores de escarpes de falla y/o depresiones tectónicas. Sus longitudes varían entre 18 y 48 km y su anchura entre 0,2 y 4 km. Estos morfotipos tectónicos están generados por una densa fracturación normal secundaria con tendencia N-S y están relacionadas con el movimiento transcurrente de la falla principal.
