Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified a plethora of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes, but most often with little information about the mechanism underlying the relationship between these genetic variants associated with type 2 diabetes and the diabetic phenotype.
