This work deals with the cracking of a French pressure water reactor bottom head under simulated severe accidental conditions. The influence of Two grades of 16MND5 steels were investigated in order to quantify the influence of ductility dip cracking (induced by a small amount of Aluminum and Sulfure, varying between grades) on the crack propagation.An experimental setup was designed to simulate the thermal mechanical conditions of a severe accident on a tubular specimen. The biaxial stress state of a vessel bottom head was reproduced by applying a tension and an internal pressure to the sample. Isothermal creep tests were performed at 900-1000°C.
