International audiencePolar lows are mesoscale (between 200 and 600 km) and short-lived intense low pressure systems. In the Northern Hemisphere, they form between October and April and are characterized by strong wind speeds and heavy snowfalls. They can develop in a few hours over open sea areas, in regions of large temperature gradients. We show the main characteristics of polar lows over the North Atlantic through a case study and a climatological analysis. Challenges associated with their forecast are then presented. Finally, the links between climate change and polar lows are discussed.Les polar lows sont des dépressions intenses de méso-échelle (de 200 à 600 km) et de courte durée de vie (quelques heures à quelques jours).
