L’Acteur au Moyen Âge: L’Histrion et ses avatars en Occident de saint Augustin à saint Thomas

The claim of existence of theatre in Western Europe during the Early Middle Ages is far from being uncontroversial. Not that these remote centuries were void, but would it be fair to call medieval performances "theatre"? This PhD tries to answer this question by addressing the problem of the actor in the Early and High Middle Ages, and to prove three main ideas. [Chapter 1] First, that that the lexicon of the ancient actor (histrio, mimus, scaenicus, etc.), which is used abundantly throughout the Middle Ages, refers to an actual practice and is not a fossil of the ancient Patristics. [Chapter 2] Second, that these latin words refer all to a vague category of entertainers practicing various arts, including dancing, singing, training animals or joking, but also simulating. [Chapter 3] Third, that this art of simulation includes the capacity of impersonation, that is to say the capacity of a man to simulate another person’s identity by way of play. [Conclusion] At the end of this study, we cannot indisputably prove that the actor existed in the Early Middle Ages and in the High Middle ages by using one piece of evidence, but the network which we have slowly woven, by collecting various clues allow us to believe that a theatrical actor have existed at this period. And if we reflect on our initial idea, which is that we can suggest the existence of theatre from the existence of the actor, we can now deduce that theatre did exist in the Early and the High Middle Ages.L'existence de théâtre pendant le Moyen Âge occidental est toujours sujette à débat. Non pas que ces siècles ne connurent rien, mais peut-on véritablement parler de "théâtre"? Cette thèse de doctorat tente de répodnre à cette question en abordant la question de l'acteur pendant le haut Moyen Âge et le Moyen Âge central, et de prouver trois idées. [chapitre 1] D'abord que le lexique de l'acteur antique (histrio, mimus, scaenicus, etc.), qui reste abondamment utilisé au Moyen Âge, renvoie à une véritable pratique et n'est pas un fossile de la patristique des premiers siècles. [chapitre 2] Ensuite, que ces mots latins renvoient à une catégorie lâche d'amuseurs pratiquant divers arts, dont la danse, le chant, le dressage ou la plaisanterie, mais aussi la simulation. [chapitre 3] Enfin, que cette simulation inclut une capacité d'impersonnation, c'est-à-dire la capacité pour un homme de simuler l'identité d'une autre personne pas jeu. [Conclusion] Au terme de ce parcours, nous ne pouvons pas avancer un exemple indiscutable attestant de l’existence de l’acteur au haut Moyen Âge et au Moyen Âge central, mais, en mettant bout à bout les indices que nous avons patiemment accumulés, nous pensons pouvoir affirmer que l’acteur au sens fort a existé. Or, si nous reprenons notre hypothèse de départ, qui veut que l’acteur soit l’élément déterminant de la pratique théâtrale, nous pouvons donc déduire que le théâtre a dû exister au haut Moyen Âge et au Moyen Âge central
