This thesis deals with the question of Francophone Belgians’ linguistic representations towards the French language. More specifically, the main goal of this study is to understand how Francophone Belgians define what they think is legitimate or not in terms of language. Two complementary sociolinguistic surveys were set up to this end. First, an online questionnaire collected quantitative data from 395 Francophone Belgians of diverse sociodemographic profiles. The results were analysed statistically, both to identify the general tendencies and to assess the potential impact of certain sociodemographic variables (age, sex and level of education) upon the participants’ answers.
