Two nearly identical MODIS instruments are currently operated on-orbit: one on-board the EOS Terra spacecraft launched in December 1999 and the other on-board the Aqua spacecraft launched in May 2002. Both sensors went through extensive pre-launch calibration and characterization activities that had provided many critically important parameters and sensor characteristics in support of their on-orbit operation and calibration.
