Oyster reefs are one of eleven unique habitats prioritized for restoration in the Hudson River Estuary to improve overall environmental quality and provide society with new and increased benefits from the estuary environment (Miller 2013). This goal is shared by many coastal states and has inspired many supportive breeding programs to revitalize native oyster reefs (Crassostrea virginica) in estuaries across the Eastern United States. In some cases, these programs rely on domesticated aquaculture oyster broodstock to supplement populations with hatchery-produced oysters.
