Summary of Dissertation Recitals Three Programs of Wind Music

Three conducting recitals representing a variety of wind music were performed in lieu of a dissertation. The first recital was a collection of performances by the University of Michigan Symphony Band and Concert Band and an ad hoc student ensemble. Intégrales by Edgard Varèse was performed on September 28, 2012 by the Symphony Band in Hill Auditorium. Road Stories by Jennifer Higdon was performed on December 3, 2012 by the Symphony Band in Hill Auditorium. Vermont Counterpoint by Steve Reich was performed on January 19, 2013 by an ad hoc student ensemble in Britton Recital Hall. Fantasies on a Theme by Haydn by Norman Dello Joio was performed on February 11, 2013 by the Concert Band in Hill Auditorium. Rain Spell by Tōru Takemitsu was performed on February 22, 2013 by the Symphony Band Chamber Winds in Stamps Auditorium. A corresponding lecture, “Who Cares If You Listen?,” was presented to a conducting seminar on September 19, 2013. The second recital was a collection of performances by the Symphony Band, Concert Band, and an ad hoc student ensemble. French Dances Revisited by Adam Gorb was performed on October 7, 2013 by the Concert Band in Hill Auditorium. “Galliard battaglia” from Ludi Musici I by Samuel Scheidt and “Sonata pian e forte” and “Canzon per sonar quarti toni” from Sacrae symphoniae (1597) by Giovanni Gabrieli were performed on October 22, 2013 by the Symphony Band Chamber Winds in First United Methodist Church of Ann Arbor. Nonet, op. 31 by Louis Spohr was performed on November 19, 2013 by an ad hoc student ensemble for a lecture–recital in Stamps Auditorium. A corresponding lecture, “Pirate Music, Love Songs, and Justin Bieber,” preceded this performance. The third recital was presented on January 21, 2014 as a lecture–recital in Stamps Auditorium. Symphony no. 1 in C Major, op. 21 by Ludwig van Beethoven (arranged by Georg Schmitt) and four movements from Serenade no. 1 in D Major, op. 11 by Johannes Brahms (reconstructed by Alan Boustead) were performed by ad hoc student ensembles.
