Summary of Dissertation Recitals Three Programs of Piano Music

Three piano recitals were given in lieu of a written dissertation. The first recital included works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Béla Bartók, and Franz Liszt. Mozart’s contrapuntal late style was presented in B-flat major, K. 570. Elaborations were provided by the performer in the second movement. To demonstrate Bartók’s advanced folk arrangements, Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs Op. 20 was performed. Liszt’s spiritual devotion to God was represented by Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude. Liszt’s arrangement of J. S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in A minor concluded the recital. The second lecture-recital, “Unfinished Beauty,” focused on fragments and incomplete works of Mozart. The incomplete Fantasy in D Minor K. 397 was provided with an ending by the performer. The isolated fragments of suite movements composed by Mozart were put together, integrated, transposed, and completed to make an entire Suite in C. The third recital presented C. P. E. Bach’s A minor Sonata. Haydn’s Sonata in E Major, Hob. XVI:22 was presented as an example of the influence of C. P. E. Bach, with varied repeats provided by the performer.
