Autonomous driving systems (ADS) in autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles have the potential to improve driving safety and enable drivers to perform non-driving tasks concurrently. Drivers sometimes fail to fully leverage a vehicle’s autonomy because of a lack of trust. To address this issue, the present study examined the influence of risk on drivers’ trust. Subject tests were conducted to evaluate the effects of combined internal and external risk, where participants drove a simulated semi-autonomous vehicle and completed a secondary task at the same time.
