Damage to peripheral nerve fibers results in axonal loss and demyelination followed by regeneration and remyelination under optimal conditions with the possibility of some functional recovery. The experimental challenge is to accelerate axonal regeneration to promote reinnervation and improve functional recovery after peripheral nerve injury.
