Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is one of the most common autosomal recessive genetic diseases. It is caused by mutations in the gene encoding the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). CF causes chronic lung disease including thickened mucus, bacterial infection and inflammation, with a progressive loss of pulmonary function and, ultimately, death. Several clinical trials have been performed to date assessing the potential of gene therapy to limit the progression of CF lung disease. However, a clinically relevant treatment has yet to emerge.
