My research focuses on the transformations of heating practices in Istanbul driven by the arrival of a new energy resource. Through the analysis of a contested and non linear trajectory of natural gas diffusion, my dissertation reveals the specificities and the contradictions of an « ordinary » process of energy transition (natural gas being a substitute for traditional fuels such as coal/wood) in light of the unequal dynamics of social appropriation of technological innovations, which reinforce and sometimes subvert the very nature of technical and political projects.
