The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) plays a critical role at the cathode of most fuel cells. Due to the slow kinetics of the ORR, research has focused primarily on generating electrocatalysts with improved activity and economic viability. Building on the prior ORR success of a carbon-supported binuclear copper complex of 3,5-diamino-1,2,4-triazole, the first section of this thesis focuses on four copper complexes built from structurally similar ligands which were synthesized and examined for their effectiveness as ORR electrocatalysts: 1,2,4 triazole (CuTri), 3,4,5-triamino-1,2,4-triazole (CuTAT), 3,5-diamino-1,2,4-triazole (CuDAT), and 4-amino-3,5-di-2-pyridyl-4H-1,2,4-triazole (CuABPT).
