This thesis presents an understanding of early writing development in pre-school and first year classrooms through teachers’ beliefs, classroom practices and children’s reflections. The study was conducted in three phases. In the first phase, the participants were 12 children from three different pre-school classrooms, which were situated in primary schools, and their teachers. The participants were observed over the course of one month at the end of the academic year in their natural classroom settings, and the teachers were interviewed at the end of the observations.
