This article proposes a five years assessment of the efforts undertaken by the African countries to answer Dakar commitment on the six objectives of Education For All, with a focus on the millenium development goal relating to the universal primary schooling by 2015. If the progress recorded today on the continent is real, in particular access to school, there is still a long way to go on the road to 2015 in the fields of retention (four children out of ten do not finish the primary school in Africa in 2003), quality and equity.
