The problem of exclusion of African Americans from mainstream museums plagues every area of their structure, from the board of trustees to the staff, from the collections down to what is exhibited to the public. The thesis addresses the issues involved in shaping mainstream museums into institutions that engage and represent the diversity of society. By focusing on both the historical nature of mainstream museums and various socio-economic issues of the African American community, an attempt can be made to identify problem areas in the mainstream museum arena in order to develop solutions.M.S., Arts Administration -- Drexel University, 200
