This study was undertaken in an attempt to define toning more clearly and establish a theoretical basis for future research. The acoustic, physiologic, and psychologic parameters of spontaneous and sustained self-generated vocal sound were investigated. Findings indicate that there is a measurable vibration which radiates from the vocal apparatus which impacts the person who tones internally, through resonance and bone-conducted hearing, and externally, by way of the external auditory canal. Although pre-music, sustained vocal sound may affect the limbic system as does music. There is enough evidence to warrant further investigation in the area of toning and pain reduction.
