This dissertation researched the biological and psychosocial characteristics of depression in elderly people. The results reveal a strong vascular contribution to the onset and progression of depression. Biomarkers in the blood may be able to predict the development and progression of depression, while surveys can be used to identify symptoms of depression at an early stage. These symptoms contribute to a poorer quality of life for people with cognitive problems. Symptoms of depression also occur in caregivers of people with dementia, which can have a negative impact on their quality of life. Finally, this dissertation also identified physical symptoms in people with severe psychiatric disorders, including depression
