We are living longer, but are these additional years spent in good health? Life expectancy in western countries has increased continuously over recent years. The issue at stake is if this rise includes healthy years. The answer depends on the health indicator used, e.g., perceived health, disability, or cognitive impairment. A study by Jagger et al. (2016) provides evidence for an increase in life expectancy without cognitive impairment and an absolute compression of cognitive impairment between 1991 and 2011.
