Measurement of the Gamow­-Teller states in 116Sb and 122Sb

This thesis consists of three topics. The first topic is the measurement of Gamow-teller states through the Sn(3He,t)Sb charge-exchange reaction (the isotopes A=116 and A=122 were studied). Measurements were performed with the Grand Raiden spectrometer and analysed with a Multipole Decomposition Analysis (MDA). For Sb116, 38+/-7% of the Ikeda sum-rule was measured below an excitation energy 28 MeV. For Sb122, this was 48+/-6%. These results are in agreement with the quenching phenomenon of Gamow-teller strength (generally around 50 %) and with previous results (though with an improved accuracy). Different contributions of the quasi-free charge-exchange background could be the reason why the percentages are different and a follow-up experiment is needed to determine that. Apart from a predicted peak near 4 MeV, the results were also in fair agreement with QRPA+QPVC calculations. The second topic is the verification of the passive cooling of the X-slit system by stainless steel ribs through thermal simulations. Based on the simulations and on experimental verification, it is concluded that the temperature of the electronics which are around the X-slit will not exceed 55 degrees Celsius, while the limit for the electronics is generally around 80 degrees Celcius. The third topic is the design of the NeuLAND VETO detector. Although the optimal design of the detector has been established, the simulations show that the use of a VETO detector is not advantageous, unless the scattering chamber and its adjacent beam pipe contain air
